Sunni Islamist Salafi jihadi group that was at one time an unrecognized quasi-state in Iraq and Syria. They are one of the most prolific jihadi organizations and have led to a number of off-shoot organizations that they deem ‘provinces’ in their greater Islamic state, or Caliphate.
