Previously a Salafi jihadist group, the organization sought to impose Sharia law across Mali. Following the group’s seizure of Timbuktu in 2012, the French led an intervention in direct response called Operation Serval. Ansar Dine later merged with other Islamist groups in Mali to form Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin.
